Community Guidelines

Basic Rules of the community
(Mods note: We know some of these might seem a little strict or over the top, but they come from experience, trust us.)

1) You MUST be 18 years or older to join.

2) Character profiles must be written by the writer wishing to join the community.

3) This is a role play community, and we encourage all writers to post early and often. Posts can be in the form of journal entries, solo scenes, interactions with other characters in either threaded or 'joint post' form written in Google Docs or an IM client (if the latter, please post in paragraph form, no IM speak please). Basically anything goes!

If you are going to be unable to post for a significant length of time (longer than a week, say) please post an entry in OOC. We understand that everyone has a life outside of the community and things sometimes get busy, but have the courtesy of letting your fellow writers and the mods know if you have to take a break.

If a writer does not post at least once in a 30 day period and there has been no notice in the OOC that they will be away, they will be on probation and their characters will be on hiatus. If there have not been two posts within the following 30 days and there has been no communication with the mods, the writer will be dropped from the community and their canon characters will be open for others to take up.

4) Do not wait for someone to tell you what to do, be active! Take the initiative and write a post for your characters in action, there's a big fleet out there and surely something is going on. Even better, IM another writer and come up with a scene together. :)

All we ask is that if you come up with a big plot idea that will affect several characters, give the mods a heads up so we can discuss it with you, we might want to join in! In some cases we might ask that you post your idea in the OOC so that everyone has a chance to comment on it and offer suggestions.

5) The Moderators are the only ones who can initiate Cylon attacks upon the fleet.

If you want to write a Cylon sleeper agent in the fleet, or if you have an idea for a Cylon attack, let us know! We'd be happy to consider it and there's a good chance it would be approved, we just don't want Basestars dropping in willy-nilly. Think about how often the Cylons actually show up on BSG itself.

6) No destruction of ships in the fleet (i.e. you can't get a wild hair and blow up Rising Star like Ron Moore did to Cloud Nine). Damage to a ship that can be fixed is fine, as is the loss of small craft such as Vipers and Raptors, but if you want to do this in large numbers please check with a mod first so we can discuss the idea with you.

7) At least 1 out of 4 characters from one writer has to be the opposite sex. This is so we can have somewhat of a balanced population.

These rules will be enforced by the moderators. One violation will result in a warning, two and the writer will be on probation. After three violations the moderators reserve the right to ask the writer to leave. We don't want to be evil mods and will work with those willing to work with us.

Guidelines:

Character interaction: If you want to interact with another writer's character, please contact them either through the OOC or by E-mail/IM and discuss your ideas with them. Please don't have your character interact with theirs without their permission.

We strongly encourage use of third person in scenes. (Example: Kara walked into CIC and saluted Tigh.) Please do not use first person(Example: I walked into CIC and saluted Tigh) unless in something like a character journal entry.

Out-of-character knowledge should not be used in-character unless your character is in a position to know certain things that others wouldn’t. Check with the writer in question if you think your character might know a secret of theirs before posting.

Canon Characters: Kobol's Legacies is completely AU from canon. The only canon characters allowed are the Cylon models, and those would not be exactly the same as seen on the show. For example, instead of the Boomer or Athena versions we might see a different version of that same model eight. Check out the Humaniod Cylon article on the Battlestar Galactica Wiki if you have more questions about the Cylons.

Original Characters: We love original characters, the more the better. They must fit into the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica universe, however, and must include a brief description of their background. There is a limit to pre-war relationships, and family relations surviving the attack on the Colonies. If you want your character to have living relatives from before the attacks, talk it over with the mods, if there is a believable way for this to have happened include it in the character profile.

This community contains mature situations (violence and sexuality). When writing adult content (which we define as explicit, heavy violence or sexuality) please give careful thought regarding the language used and level of detail necessary.

Portions of scenes that contain explicit descriptions of sex or violence should be placed behind separate lj-cut tags with an appropriate, clear notification. For sexual content, please include the phrase 'Adult Content: Sexuality' in the cut-tag label. For violent content, use 'Adult Content: Violence'.

Entries should be spelling/grammar checked before posting. A random typo here and there's no big deal, but please make every effort to proofread your scene before posting.

Plagiarism is not allowed. Please credit any text or plot ideas taken from another source. When possible, an effort should be made to credit graphics (i.e. as a courtesy, please credit your character icons).

Kobol's Legacies: Battlestar Avalon at Insane Journal

About Us:
Kobol's Legacies is a RPG (role-playing game) and character fiction community based on the new Battlestar Galactica universe. A true alternative universe with original characters. The setting revolves around the Battlestar Avalon and the Colony of Aerilon a short time before the Cylon Attack.

Our format consist of solo character and character interaction scenes that are posted on our in-character community. Writers collaborate scenes using Google Documents or AIM/YIM. Threaded comment scenes are also used. Our story plots contain mature themes, so we only allow writers who are 18 years of age and older to join the community. We suggest some familiarity with the Ron Moore version of Battlestar Galactica.

Our community began in February 2006 on Greatest Journal with a continuous story line that had been successfully collaborated between our writers. On December 18, 2007 we moved the community to InsaneJournal after technical problems out of our control occurred on Greatest Journal. Summer 2008, the community went on hiatus. On September 30, 2009 we will officially launch from beta.

Note: This story ( RPG ) is not about the Battlestar Galactica and its rag tag fleet. Its based on original characters and an alternative universe beyond that of the tv series.

Personality:
Tra is as headstrong and impulsive as he is a gifted pilot and leader. He is outgoing and loves to be in the center of the action. It doesn't matter if the action is in a Viper or a bar room fight. He smokes and drinks too much, but manages to keep it off duty. Duty and honor are not just words to him, they are life.

Bio.

Tra was not just raised in the military, but at times it seemed that he was raised by the military. Growing up in Capiaca city he managed to lead an almost normal life. Both his mother and father were career military, both served on battlestars and were home seldom. His early years were spent in boarding schools and with the sister of his mother. He never felt abandoned or neglected. He figured his solitude was the price he had to pay for his mother and father to keep the colonies safe.

At 18 Tra was accepted to the Colonial Military Academy, where he was given his first taste of being in the military and not just being a child of the military. He was the model cadet. Strong, smart, a born leader. Nothing the instructors or upperclassmen could throw at him seemed to slow him down. He was the one the other cadet came to for help for everything from trouble a home to class work. He quickly rose through the ranks to cadet Cmdr. His class graduated an unheard of 98% of cadets and Tra graduated with honors.

Arriving at OCS he learned that on the way home his mother, father and his fiancee had been killed when the door of an orbital shuttle malfunctioned and opened while in flight. The oxygen was vented into space.There were no survivors. This event changed him. Turning down a chance to take leave he went through OCS. From that moment, the military became the only thing he had in his life. Nothing else mattered.

While his performance at the basic and flight schools were all graded as outstanding, Tra did develop a few flaws that he had not had before. He had started to drink. Never on duty, but more often than he should. With the drinking came fighting and the occasional trip to a local jail or the brig.

Once he was done with training he was transferred to the Battlestar Pegasus and attached to VF-34, The Stingers. Upon arriving with three of his classmates, the Pegasus was assigned to a combined action exercise CAX (War games) against two Battlestars. To keep the nuggets out of the way, the squadron commander put Tra in command a four Viper flight escorting a recon Raptor. The recon was to the rear of the Pegasus in controlled space. Twenty minutes after the recon flight left, the combined squadrons from the two "enemy" Battlestars staged a sneak attack that destroyed the CAP and disabled the launch tubes on Pegasus. Leading the recon flight under a electronic screen from the Raptor, Tra attacked the numerically superior force using the same sneak attack tactics they had used to attack the Pegasus. He managed to "shoot down" ten of the attackers with his flight racking up another ten kills. This broke the back of the attack and allowed the Pegasus enough time to repair he simulated damage to the launch tubes and launch the alert Vipers. This earned him the call sign Achilles and a quick promotion to Lt. Two days later Achilles was arrested for a bar room fight on Picon. A demotion and transfer followed quickly

Personality: Dr. Zoticus is a low-key kind of guy. He likes classical music, and was quite a patron of the symphony before the attacks. He is incredibly learned, but rather slow on the uptake at times. He has the stereotypical book-smart but lacking in common sense type of brain. He thinks very quickly and can come off as scatterbrained, but usually at least he knows exactly where he's headed with something. He pays great attention to detail, and routine is quite important to him. He tends to go through the same motions at the start and finish of every day, and he's the type to check his locks five times before heading to bed.

Family: His father, Philo Zoticus, Sr., was also a neurosurgeon in Caprica City. His mother, Amanda Zoticus (née Tilly) was an investment banker. They divorced when Philo Jr. was quite young, but both remained in the same city. Philo is an only child.

At the age of 36 Philo met and married pre-med student Mary-Claire Ari. They were married for two years before splitting, and have a four year old daughter daughter named Colette.

Career or Military History: Upon graduation from secondary school, Philo immediately began his pre-med track at Caprica University. He graduated top of his class with a BS in Microbiology/Pre-Med. At that time he left for Mercuria College on Picon, where he achieved his MD with honors at the age of 26. Upon this achievement, he received an invitation from the Canceron Heights Medical Center for residency.

For most of his life, Philo's only goal was to become a neurosurgeon and follow in the footsteps of his father. Once he succeeded in that, he didn't really know what else to do. Without something to strive toward, he turned toward hospital politics and soon befriended several public officials.

Flight training was the most popular choice amongst the recruits however it was perhaps the most difficult to get into. She attended the Caprica Fleet Aviation School for her advanced flight training before being qualified for flight duty under the Colonial Fleet articles. She specialized in vipers, her reactions and feel for flying were excellent so she had no problem. Her callsign was given thanks to her so called relationship crisis in which she apparently was always on the rebound from yet another bad relationship. She was the rebound girl that used men to keep her satisfied which held some truth. It is a callsign she has grown to tolerate and find humor in. Current Flight Status: In-Active. Her callsign was given thanks to her so called relationship crisis in which she apparently was always on the rebound from yet another bad relationship. Personality

Jake is a friendly and outgoing person, always ready to lend a hand to those who need it. Due to his rank and position he tends to keep his personal opininons to himself unless with friends and colleagues, which might give off the impression of him being reserved or cold to those who don't know him well.

After the fall of the Colonies Jake buried himself in his work and mourned the loss of his wife in private, feeling that duty was all he had left. Over the next three years he gradually came back out of his shell and allowed himself to have a life outside of duty.

Biography

Born into a family with a long tradition of naval service, first in the navy of the Tauron Empire and later the Colonial Fleet, Jake is the son and grandson of Admirals. His grandfather Alexander Mackenzie retired after the 1st Cylon War after serving as a Fleet Admiral during that conflict, and Jake’s father David fought in both that war and the Tylium Wars. David ultimately rose to the position of Chief of Naval Operations, and had been retired for five years by the time of the holocaust.

His family was loving, but he inherited a strong competitive streak and the desire to measure up to the high standards set by his father and grandfather. Mackenzies are brought up with a strong values of tradition, honor, and duty, and it was expected that he would follow in the footsteps of those who came before him and join the fleet when he was old enough.

By the time he graduated high school Jake had lived on fourteen different military bases on ten of the tweleve Colonies, but had maintained his affinity to Aerilon through summers spent on his family's ancestral farm in Ostia province.

Jake attended Tuaron Military Science Academy at Gladius Cross after graduating high school. He was the third generation of his family to attend TMSA and was an honor graduate, ranked 2nd in his class and was the Cadet Corps XO his senior year. Unlike his father and grandfather he did not achieve the rank of Cadet Corps Commander, a source of disappointment for his father that secretly made Jake feel he had let the family down.

While a student he was a member of the pyramid team and helped it reach and win the Colonial academic league championship game his senior year, the first time the school had done so since his grandfather had attended.

He was introduced to Bridget Reese in his freshman year at a party thrown by his classmate and friend Jill Simmons. It was love at first sight and the two were married shortly after they graduated their respective universities. Tragically their marriage was cut short five years later, when Bridget and her parents were killed by a drunk driver while she was visiting them on Aerilon. Jake was on deployment at the time, and it took over a day for him to return to make arrangements for her funeral.

Bridget's death shattered Jake, and he took the full amount of leave allowed before returning to duty. The fun loving, jovial Jake had been replaced by a colder more formal man devoted to duty and little else for the first year after his wife's death.

Jill belongs to an old aristocratic family that can be traced back to the time Aerilon was under the rule of Taurus Empire. The Simmons family wealth comes from their vast landholdings on the Colony of Aerilon, most of which is prime farm lands in Chevrons Valley on the Southern Continent. The family owns majority stock in Simmons-Starr Seed and Chemical, a major agriculture supplier.

Jill is the youngest child of three. Her father was the Colonial Governor of Aerilon for 18 years (3 six year terms) before he retired. She was born two years before he was elected to the office. She grew up in the capital city of Casperon. Unlike her siblings, who were much older and out of the Governor’s mansion by the second term, Jill’s childhood was public. Her mother managed her public activities so as to insure she reflected well on her father. Overall she had a happy and healthy childhood under the circumstances though ever conscious of other peoples expectations of her.

When she was twelve, she met Bridget Reese for the first time at the family ranch. Bridget’s father had been a political associate of Jill’s father, and who in the third term became the vice governor. Jill and Bridget had been the best of best friends.

Father: Benjamin Lloyd Simmons: Retired, Aerilon Governor. He received the Colonial Medal of Valor and Purple Star for action in the First Canceron Campaign at the beginning of the First Cylon War. He had been wounded and lost his leg in the war. After an honorable discharged after the war and he entered law school. His siblings managed and supervised the daily activities of the family business. He was free to later entered into politics. His first elected office was as Mayor of Casperon, which he held for less than one term after his election to the Governorship.

Mother: Sandra Anne Simmons was an Environmental Scientist from Caprica. She met Jill‘s father during the war. She was unintentionally harder on Jill when she was growing up because of her public childhood. Though Jill often rebelled against her mother’s wishes, she loved her deeply. Sandra Simmons died three years before the Second Cylon War. Jill regretted that she was not there for her when she past into the after world.

Family and Personal History:

James comes from a family with a long tradition of service in law enforcement on the Colony of Picon. His father is a senior criminal investigator for Picon's Federal Police. His brother is a Colonial Law Enforcement Agent on Virgon. His sister is an assistant district attorney on Picon. Jame was the youngest in the family, and was expected to follow the family tradition. He attain his law degree, and past the BAR exam to practice law on Picon. Six months into his practice at a respected law firm, he quit and enlisted into the Colonial Forces. His family thought he would service in the Judge Advocate Corps, but instead he went to flight school, and became a raptor pilot.

A couple of years later he met a young Lieutenant (j.g) Jilleen Simmons who was a rookie fighter pilot. After nearly two years of dating they married. They were a typical military couple with spans of separation. They managed to be stationed together on Picon, Caprica, and Aerilon, but not within the same command structure. The relationship had a few difficult moments because duty demanded long periods of separations.

James became a Special Forces officer after a year's training at Special Warfare School on Picon. His first assigned SF unit was aboard the Pegasus, and one of the rare times that he was stationed aboard the same battlestar as his wife.

He did one ground tour on Sagittaron during one of many periods of unrest on this colony. He was wounded by a roadside bomb while on a night patrol. His wife followed him to Caprica, where he did nine months of difficult rehabilitation so he could walk again.

He later returned to an active Special Operations unit when they transferred to Aerilon together. He eventually took command of a SF Raptor Squadron aboard the Battlestar Avalon.

Premise for Kobol's Legacies: Battlestar Avalon

Butterfly effect: It is a common subject in fiction when presenting scenarios involving time travel and with "what if" scenarios where one storyline diverges at the moment of a seemingly minor event resulting in two significantly different outcomes. - Wikipedia

Our storyline diverges during the First Cylon War, when Operation Raptor Talon was delayed. The Fleet instead defended Tauron. In canon, as seen in the Razor flashbacks, the Battlestar Columbia was destroyed. In our universe, the Columbia survived, and the First Cylon War extended for another year. This caused a chain of events which altered the future forty-one years later, which starts our storyline.

Note: Human canon characters' fate will differ, and will not become playing characters in our universe. Final Five characters exist but are unknown. The Cylons had added time to conduct their human experiments on the ice planet therefore more Cylon models beyond canon are possible, they may become playing characters.

The Unity of the Colonies is frayed. The Colonial federal government is less powerful and centralized. Each Colony has greater sovereign powers. As a result of the altered chain of events, each colony retain controls of their own military and fleet. Under treaty, each Colony contributes to and maintains a common defense. (A version of NATO or equal share alliance.) Each commissioned officer hold an oath of loyalty to the Articles of Unification, and their own colony which can conflict. It's not a perfect organization.

As a result of a dual-chain of command and control, the Colonial Forces are not equally uniformed, but do keep up and share military standards for tactics, training, equipment, and weapons. (Example NATO). In our universe, not every fleet shares all networks, or use similar computer programs, such as the CNP (Command Navigation Program) designed by Dr. Gaius Baltar.

Eventually when the Cylon's do attack, they will not succeed. A number of Colonies and fleets are not completely destroyed.

The initial set up for military characters attached to the Battlestar Avalon: The Battlestar Strike Group is on port of call at Caprica. The Avalon is in orbit above Caprica near the Battlestar Galactica Memorial and Colonial Military Museum. (The Galactica was decommissioned a year earlier.) The orbiting museum is also a transit-shuttle terminal for visiting war ships.
