Rank in the military is an important part of what makes the Colonial Forces work. Officers are on the higher tier, and then the enlisted on the lower end.
Commissioned Officers are distinguished from other military members by holding a commission; they are trained as leaders and hold command positions.
The officer ranks can be set into three groups:
- Flag Officers - Those that hold an Admiral's rank. They have a flag to represent their office. The ship they reside on is a flagship.
- Senior Officers - Commanders, Colonels, Majors are senior officers in the Colonial Forces.
- Field Officers - Also known as junior officers are Captains, Full Lieutenants, Lieutenants Junior Grade, and Ensigns
Another type of officer is a
Warrant Officers, which hold a Warrant of Commission, are a hybrid between Commissioned and Non-Commissioned Officers. They are specialist, and hold no regular command authority. They were being phased out of the Colonial Forces.
Non-commissioned officers are those from the enlisted rankgranted delegated authority to supervise other military members under the command of an officer. They are also known as NCO's or Non-coms. These NCO'sare usually experts and have years of experience in their field.
Enlistees have no official command authority. They are usually those who have recently joined the forces or have no general expertise in an area. Its basically an apprenticeship.
All officers and those ranking above other officers are addressed as
"Sir"'Sir' regardless of gender. There are still those who address female officers as
maim'Ma'am'. (SoSo farfar, those from
Virgon do
that.) this.As in the series, Colonial Forces officers tend to come from the wealthier Colonies of
Caprica,
Tauron,and
Virgon. There are exceptions of course, but those from the other colonies usually tend to have an upper class to upper middle class background.
